Building a community of Jesuit schools

Saint Ignatius' College, Riverview#sfxjcap2016.  In October this hashtag began appearing in Instagram as students, faculty and staff of Jesuit schools in Asia Pacific posted photographs of themselves and their friends in front of the Educate Magis map in their schools. The photos were entries to the St Francis Xavier Global Network Instagram Competition.  Educate Magis is an online community that connects educators from more than 2,000 Jesuit and Ignatian schools all over the world and the map shows the rich diversity and wide reach of the global network of Jesuit schools.  More

EAPI: Moving beyond the reefs

EAPI jubilee celebration closingOn December 3, the East Asian Pastoral Institute (EAPI) concluded its nine-month celebration of 50 years of being faithful to its original purpose and mission - to form pastoral workers to go back to their local churches and “set the world on fire” with new attitudes, knowledge and skills to effect transformation.  “We have accomplished this in unique ways, especially with the participatory multicultural community living,” said EAPI Director Fr Arthur Leger SJ.  More

New provincial for Jesuits in Vietnam

Fr Vincent Pham Van Mam SJThe new provincial of the Vietnam Jesuit Province was formally installed on December 8.  Fr Vincent Pham Van Mam (Fr Mam) SJ succeeded Fr Joseph Pham Thanh Liem (Fr Liem) SJ who served as Vietnamese Provincial for the last six years.  Members of the province, guests and collaborators joined the Mass celebrated by the new provincial in the chapel of St Joseph Jesuit Scholasticate in Ho Chi Minh City.  In his homily, Fr Mam focussed on four important elements that he wants the Jesuits in Vietnam to pay attention to: participation, dialogue, collaboration and discernment.  More

Fr Franz Magnis-Suseno SJ bestowed Matteo Ricci Award

Fr Franz Magnis-Suseno SJ receives Matteo Ricci AwardReligious extremism has been on the rise in Indonesia.  Recently, Muslim hardliners have been staging massive protests in Jakarta demanding the arrest of the city’s governor, a Christian standing for re-election, for allegedly insulting the Koran.  These protests can be viewed in part as a test of religious tolerance for Indonesia, a land of diverse cultures and religious plurality.  In this context, dialogue is all the more important, and here Fr Franz Magnis-Suseno, an 80-year old Jesuit missionary, excels.  More

Celebrating the arrival of the Jesuits in Hong Kong 90 years ago

90th anniversary of the arrival of the Jesuits in Hong KongOn December 3, the Hong Kong Matteo Ricci community of the Chinese Jesuit Province marked the 90th anniversary of the arrival of the Jesuits in Hong Kong.  Irish Jesuits Fr George Byrne and Fr John Neary arrived in Hong Kong from Dublin on December 2, 1926 upon the invitation of Bishop Henry Valorta, Vicar Apostolic of Hong Kong.  They celebrated their first Mass on the island the day after, on the Feast of St Francis Xavier.  The following year, they were joined by three more Irish Jesuits – Fathers Richard Gallagher, Patrick Joy and Daniel MacDonald – and Australian Jesuit Fr Daniel Finn.  More

A safe house in the city

Utama Safe House volunteersThe Utama Safe House (USH) is not just a safe house. It is a community that seeks to provide a safe haven for survivors of trafficking and domestic violence, especially those who have no support and are in need of protection. The staff also assist survivors through outreach programmes. USH was initiated by Sahabat Insan, a Jesuit organisation for migrant workers in Indonesia, in collaboration with several other organisations including Pulih (a charity that provides free psychological counselling services) and MiLAP (Partnership for Children and Women Services), and individual women activists.  More

Puskat Film Festival gains momentum with environment theme

2nd SAV Puskat Film FestivalThis year’s Puskat Film Festival received five times more entries than last year, when it was launched by Studio Audio Visual (SAV) Puskat, the Jesuit audio-visual centre in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.  SAV Puskat attributes the increase to aggressive promotion of the awards and the relevance of the theme, which is “Environment”.  Also known as the Ruedi Hofmann Media Awards, the inaugural Puskat Film Festival in 2015 received 20 entries. The theme was “Faith versus Corruption”.  More

Death of a Superior General: Fr Peter-Hans Kolvenbach SJ

Fr Peter-Hans Kolvenbach SJ, 1928-2016Father Peter-Hans Kolvenbach SJ who was Superior General of the Society of Jesus from 1983 to 2008, passed away on November 26 in Beirut, Lebanon.  He was 87 years old.  The funeral Mass was held in Beirut on November 30 attended by Fr General Arturo Sosa.  In Rome on December 2, Fr Sosa led the Jesuits based in Rome in a Mass in the Church of Gesù to celebrate the life of Fr Kolvenbach.  The principal concelebrants included members of the General Council as well as those who had been members of the General Council when Fr Kolvenbach was Superior General.  Fr Kolvenbach will be buried as he wished, under the cedars of Lebanon.  More
