General Congregation 36

Counting down to the GC 36 plenary session

On October 2, more than 200 Jesuits representing approximately 80 Jesuit provinces around the world will convene in Rome for the plenary session of General Congregation 36. A third of the delegates hail from Jesuit provinces in Asia and the Pacific, primarily those in India. Twenty-two of the delegates are from the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific.

A general congregation is the supreme governing body of the Society of Jesus with power to review and update its laws. As Fr Adolfo Nicolás SJ has announced his intention to resign as Superior General of the Society of Jesus, his successor will be elected during the GC 36 plenary session.

In the run up to the plenary session, we offer interviews with some JCAP delegates speaking about the general congregation that most impacts their province or region and of their hopes for GC 36. Watch JCAP President Fr Mark Raper's interview here. We will also be regularly publishing updates on our GC 36 news page.

“He Never Went Back Home”

Fr General Adolfo Nicolas SJFr Adolfo Nicolás SJ has served as superior general of the Society of Jesus since 2008. He will formally step down next month as Jesuit electors gather in Rome to choose a new leader and deliberate on the future of the order. Eight years is not a long run for a Jesuit Superior General but 80-year-old Fr Nicolás is leaving a lasting imprint on the global community of Jesuits and lay collaborators, according to Jesuits and many observers. He has done so in ways strikingly similar to his fellow Jesuit who arrived in Rome five years after he did – Pope Francis. More
